Netflix Makes 4-Pic Pact With Duplass Brothers – Sundance

EXCLUSIVE: As everyone wonders how Ted Sarandos and Netflix will stack up as film buyers at Sundance, Netflix has closed a significant deal with one of the most prolific filmmaking teams here in Park City. Sarandos revealed to Deadline that Netflix has made a four-picture deal with Duplass Brothers Productions partners Mark and Jay Duplass. In the deal, Netflix will finance four movies produced by the brothers, and there will be a short theatrical window before each film will be offered to Netflix subscribers. He wasn’t specific about the films.

“This is just the latest step in our very long relationship with the Duplass Brothers,” Sarandos told Deadline. “We’ve been working with them almost since the very beginning, when we were red-envelope delivery. Independent film has always been a big part of Netflix, and the reason we do things like the Adam Sandler deal is so we can do things like this as well.” Sarandos also said that his team is on the prowl for acquisitions.

The Duplass Brothers Productions has a hand in four high-profile Sundance premieres: the U.S. Dramatic Competition entry The Bronze starring Melissa Rauch, which premiered Thursday night; Patrick Brice’s The Overnight, which stars Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman; the Sean Baker-directed Tangerine in the Next section; and Animals, a raunchy animated series about animals in New York City that premieres Monday. ICM Partners brokered the deal for the Duplass brothers.
