‘Parks & Recreation’ Ratings Steady In Week 2, ‘The Flash’ Down In Return As State Of the Union Viewership Dips

It was mostly status quo for broadcast networks’ coverage of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address in the preliminary, not time zone-adjusted fast national ratings, with another slip in viewership. The Big 4 networks averaged a total of 19.6 million viewers, down -7% from the fast nationals last year when a dip in the broadcast fast nationals translated into another State of the Union low for Obama in the final viewership across all networks.

There was a small uptick in adults 18-49. Besides a .1 rise for NBC (1.5 in 18-49), the other nets matched their fast nationals last year, CBS (1.3), ABC (1.1) and Fox (1.0) for a cume demo rating of a 4.9, up a tenth from last year’s 4.8 total.

NBC’s Parks And Recreation continued its solid final season run. Another two back-to-back episodes from 8-9 PM averaged 3.855 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in adults 18-49. That was up +10% in total viewers for the cult comedy’s biggest audience in two years, since Jan. 24 2013, and off a tenth from last week’s hourlong season premiere, which matched a 21-month high. (Parks is a heavily time-shifted comedy, with its ratings growing about +50% from Live+Dame Day to Live+7). With the show’s ratings staying solid, maybe NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt will send another email to series co-creator/showrunner Mike Schur and star Amy Poehler. “The day after the (season premiere) ratings, I emailed both Amy and Mike and I said, do you want to do another season?,” he quipped last week.

With ABC and CBS opting for repeats in the 8-9 hour leading to the address, Fox’s MasterChef Junior (1.7, even with last week) was the highest-rated program of the night in 18-49 in the fast nationals.

As usual, the CW aired all originals against the speech. The Flash (1.3), bucked the trend of scripted series returning higher after a holiday hiatus this season, down -13% from its most recent original on Dec. 9. Veteran Supernatural (1.0) was flat.
