‘Man Seeking Woman’ Creator Simon Rich Glad Dad’s Not A Critic Anymore – TCA

Simon Rich, creator of FXX’s new Man Seeking Woman, says he’s “very relieved” his father “is not a current television critic.”

Rich’s series stars Jay Baruchel as Josh Greenberg, a naive romantic desperately looking for love in the digital dating era. Early episodes include a scene in which both of Josh’s hands walk out on him rather than help him masturbate, and an ex-girlfriend who now is dating Hitler.

Rich calls the show, based on his book Last Girlfriend on Earth, “embarrassingly autobiographical.” His father is Frank Rich, the former New York Times drama critic turned op-ed columnist who now is with New York magazine and HBO (Veep).

“The great thing about having a dad who’s a critic is extreme exposure to art from a very early age,” the younger Rich told TV critics/bloggers/tweeters/fangirls attending FX’s day at Winter TV Press Tour 2015. “I got to see a ton of theater growing up, and his shelves were packed with books and we always had access to every cable channel. I was able to discover shows like Monty Python, and playwrights like Neil Simon, and authors like Douglas Adams at an early age and I think it helped me a lot,” he said, as the bloggers/fangirls/tweeters/columnists/critics Googled madly.

Asked if he and Dad get together to exchange ideas about their writing, Simon the Younger responded, “We do pretty different sorts of writing. He writes about things like presidential politics and the fate of the free world, and I’m more of a Japanese Penis Monster guy. Hopefully he’s not too embarrassed by the path I have chosen.”

FXX has ordered 10 episodes of Rich’s half-hour comedy from Lorne MichaelsBroadway Video.

Rich wrote the pilot and is exec producing/showrunning with Jonathan Krisel directing. Krisel also is exec producing, along with Andrew Singer and Michaels.

Man Seeking Woman’s pickup to series made Rich one of the youngest TV series creators ever – Rich already being one of the youngest writers in the history of Saturday Night Live, where he spent four seasons,  2007-2011, before segueing to a writing gig at Pixar.
