‘The Night Shift’ Motors Into Season 2 With Post-‘Voice’ Slot & “Crazier Cases” – TCA

The Night Shift - Season PilotNBC’s medical series The Night Shift, which premiered in May 2014, returns for a second season February 23 in the coveted Monday 10.p.m. time slot after The Voice. At TCA today, executive producers Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs were over the moon. Sachs said getting the call that the series had been renewed was “the greatest moment ever, amazing, especially at that time slot. It’s a really big deal for us.”

But that’s not what journalists wanted to talk about most. They wanted to talk about the key art that launched the show, featuring hot doc TC Callahan (Eoin Macken) plowing through the ER on a motorcycle.

The producers appeared on the panel with cast members Macken, Jill Flint, Freddy Rodriguez and Brendan Fehr. Fehr noted that critics of the promotional image called it “awesomely bad, and they were dead on.”

But the producers gamely refused to go there. Hey, the show got picked up — they’re happy. Maybe the bad art helped. The Night Shift TCA cast“People are trying to promote the show, and they’re doing what they can,” Judah said. “Everybody does the best they can. We’re not going to crap on other people’s work.”

The producers said that premiering as a summer program helped them develop a better show “outside of the limelight.” When asked to compare Night Shift to the long-running successes ER and Grey’s Anatomy, Judah said he prefers to compare his show’s tone to the Pulp Fiction and MASH (the Altman movie, not the TV series), blending comedy with darkness.

Producers said they have no plans to take on the ebola outbreak as subject matter because “we don’t know where that’s going to go, the panic of it.” They will, however, “tap into the headlines, some of the odder stories and crazier cases” in medicine.
