‘Reckoners’ YA Book Series Lands At 20th Century Fox For Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps

EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has just landed what I’m hearing was a hotly contested young adult fantasy books series, The Reckoners by New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson. The studio made the deal to give to Shawn Levy’s Fox-based 21 Laps to produce. Daria Cercek is overseeing for Fox and Will Rack for 21 Laps.

20th century FoxThe deal is for the first two books — Steelheart and Firefight — in a planned trilogy.

In Reckoners, a burst in the sky gave ordinary people extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics, but with incredible gifts came the desire to rule. In what was once Chicago, an astonishingly powerful Epic named Steelheart installed himself as emperor. Nobody fights back but the Reckoners, a shadowy group of ordinary humans who spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them. The book centers on David, who wants in to the group because Steelheart killed his father, and he alone knows the Epics’ true weakness.

The second book centers on the aftermath of that battle and even more questions for David, who has found a new foe that will require a quest darker and even more dangerous.

Sanderson previously penned Words Of Radiance and the Mistborn Trilogy and co-authored Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series.

Fox in November acquired an untitled Tinker Bell comedy-adventure for Levy and 21 Laps that will star Melissa McCarthy as the eponymous fairy heroine, with Levy directing. Nicholas Stoller will write the script. The shingle’s most recent finished produce was the three-quel Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb, which bowed last month and has made $261.7M worldwide.
