‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Handcuffs ‘Hangover’ To Become Fandango’s Biggest R-Rated Advance Ticket Title

Fandango is reporting that the steamy Valentine’s Day weekend opener Fifty Shades Of Grey has so far been the fastest selling advance ticket R-rated title in the company’s 15-year history. It has outpaced previous top advance ticket selling R rated titles, which in order were 2010’s Sex and the City 2, 2011’s The Hangover Part II, 2013’s The Hangover Part III and last fall’s Gone Girl. It’s also biggest for a non-sequel since the first Hunger Games movie in 2012. “It’s tracking to be Fandango’s fastest-selling R-rated movie of all time,” says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger. “Very few books can claim true national phenomenon status – and Fifty Shades ranks with Twilight, The Hunger Games and Gone Girl as novels that entered the zeitgeist from coast to coast.” Of the big 2015 films, Fifty Shades compares favorably to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2. So Universal can start the red ball rolling on the second installment of the EL James novel trilogy about a young woman, Anatasia Steele, who finds the perfect man in Christian Grey–except for the damaged part of him that prevents him from being intimate and leads him to seek woman who can be dominated. The trilogy has sold over 100 million books globally.
