’12 Monkeys’ Review: Dominic Patten On DOA Dystopian Syfy Show

If you were hoping 12 Monkeys, the TV show, is going to be as good as 12 Monkeys, the 1995 Terry Gilliam movie of the same name on which this Syfy series is based, well, as I say in my video review above, you’ll need to place your hopes elsewhere.

12 Monkeys poster scrub maskPicked up for a 12-episode season last April and debuting Jan. 16, this series (created by Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett) stars Nikita alum Aaron Stanford as a time-traveling virus hunter from 2043 trying to save the world’s population from a plague that hit in 2017.

Not a bad premise but the TV version possesses none of the vigor, whimsy or wit of the original movie that starred Bruce Willis and a twitchy Brad Pitt, never mind the even more beloved La Jetee, the 1962 black-and-white Chris Marker short upon which the movie version was based. In fact, this TV version is as close to D.O.A. as is most of the world’s population in the series. Is it possible to go back in time and fix the series?

Are you a fan of the original 12 Monkeys? Are you going to watch the new TV series? Tell us what you think.
