‘Community’ To Premiere On Yahoo March 17

Yahoo said it will premiere Season 6 of its newly picked up original series Community on Tuesday, March 17. Yahoo Screen will premiere two new episodes that day with new episodes every Tuesday. The announcement was made today during Yahoo’s TCA press tour session.

Yahoo picked up the series in June a month after it was cancelled by NBC after five seasons. Production began in November Los Angeles, with 13 episodes planned. Original castmembers Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong return, and newcomers to Glendale Community College include Paget Brewster and Keith David.

The cast made the announcement official with a video (see above).

Several other suitors were interested in the series, from Universal TV and Sony Pictures TV, including rebranded cable network Esquire; streaming service Hulu, which already has off-network rights to the series; and Sony-owned Crackle. It also has an off-network pact with Comedy Central, making negotiations tougher. They went down to the wire, with cast options set to expire the day Yahoo made the deal.

Yahoo has been investing aggressively in original content, but unlike online rivals Netflix and Amazon has been betting on advertising to generate revenue for its programming.
