‘Minority Report’ Gets Fox Pilot Order

One of the highest profile pitches this season, Minority Report, continues to sail through the development season with an early pilot order. Fox has given the green light to the project, from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Godzilla writer Max Borenstein, which the network bought preemptively in September with a big put pilot commitment that had a $1 million penalty attached.

Kevin Falls has come on board as showrunner on the project, based on the 2002 movie directed by Spielberg.

(The two recently gave a straight-to-series order to Scream Queens, a horror drama from Ryan Murphy and his Glee co-creators.) Also heating up for a pilot order at Fox is another drama with a highly recognizable title, Frankenstein, from Rand Ravich and Howard Gordon.

Minority Report hails from 20th TV and Paramount TV, whose feature siblings produced the Tom Cruise-starring film. The series is envisioned as a sequel to the movie. It is set 10 years after the end of Precrime in DC. One of the three Precogs struggles to lead a “normal” human life, but remains haunted by visions of the future, when he meets a detective haunted by her past who just may help him find a purpose to his gift. Borenstein and Falls executive produce with Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Spielberg was involved in developing the series take.

This marks the second futuristic drama project for Fox in the past two seasons, following Almost Human, which went to series. Amblin TV has another pilot, Lumen at TNT, in addition to seven series on the air. This is the first network pilot for Paramount’s up and coming TV division, which also has a 13-episode, straight-to-series order at sibling cable network Nickelodeon for a live-action musical comedy based on the 2003 Paramount feature School Of Rock.

For Falls, the Minority Report showrunner duties fall under the overall deal with 20th TV he inked in October. He previously created another Fox/20th TV drama series with genre elements, Journeyman.
