EXCLUSIVE: The stage veterans who shared screen time on NBC’s Smash have committed to one of the loopier-sounding offerings of the spring season on Broadway, the new musical comedy Something Rotten! The story, set in late 16-century London, concerns two brothers determined to write a hit show in the shadow of Billy Big Boy, when they get wind of a future trend featuring simultaneous singing, acting and, you know, dancing. Casey Nicholaw (The Book Of Mormon, Aladdin) simultaneously directs and choreographs the show, with a score by determined-to-write-a-hit brothers Wayne Kirkpatrick (“Change The World”) and Karey Kirkpatrick (Chicken Run) and book by Karey Kirkpatrick and U.K. author John O’Farrell. Performances are slated to begin March 23 at the St. James, with an official opening on April 22, the eve of Billy Big Boy’s 399th death day.
D’Arcy James, who played Deborah Messing’s unhappy husband in Smash and was Tony nominated in the title role of Shrek The Musical and as Sidney Falco in the Sweet Smell Of Success musical, plays Nick Bottom, half the fraternal writing team (the other brother is as yet uncast). Borle, a Tony winner for Peter And The Starcatcher and Messing’s unhappy creative partner in Smash, plays the Bard of Avon.
Something Rotten! is produced by Kevin McCollum (In The Heights, Avenue Q, etc.), who also has the Broadway transfer of Hand To God on his plate for the spring.
