Julianne Moore won Cannes’ Best Actress prize and earned a Golden Globe nom for David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars, playing aging actress Havana Segrand who’s trying to remain relevant in Hollywood while being haunted by the ghost of her legendary actress mother. It’s a turn that’s decidedly not like in the wrenching drama Still Alice, her other awards-season offering that has already earned her a slew of noms and wins, making her an Oscar frontrunner.
Cronenberg frames his razor-sharp take on Hollywood though on a family made up of a famed TV self-help therapist (John Cusack) with an A-list celebrity clientele, and his wife (Olivia Williams), who manages the career of their child-star son (Evan Bird). And another member of the family (Mia Wasikowska) shows up fresh from the psych ward to become Havana’s personal assistant. Cronenberg and Bruce Wagner’s takes it from there. The director’s Cosmopolis lead Robert Pattinson co-stars.
