John Travolta To Star In FX’s ‘American Crime Story: People Vs. O.J.’

FX continues to assemble O.J. Simpson’s “dream team” with big-name actors. John Travolta will star as defense attorney Robert Shapiro in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, the first installment of Ryan Murphy’s new anthology miniseries, an offshoot of his hit American Horror Story FX franchise.

Travolta also will serve as a producer on the miniseries, which takes a look at the O.J. Simpson trial told from the perspective of the lawyers that explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense wiliness, and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.

This marks Travolta’s first TV series role since the 1975-79 comedy Welcome Back, Kotter. He joins David Schwimmer, who plays another Simpson attorney, his confidant Robert Kardashian, Cuba Gooding Jr, who portrays Simpson; and Sarah Paulson, who plays prosecutor Marcia Clark.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson is written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Each season of American Crime Story will focus on a different famous true crime. Ryan is executive producing with fellow AHS co-creator Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson & Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski and Dante Di Loreto. Production begins early this year in Los Angeles.

Travolta, repped by Principato-Young Entertainment and WME, recently completed production the features Criminal Activities, a crime thriller co-starring Michael Pitt; In A Valley of Violence, a revenge-driven Western co-starring Ethan Hawke; and Life On The Line, an action/drama co-starring Kate Bosworth. He next will be seen starring in The Forger.
