‘MasterChef Jr.’ Finale Up, ‘Voice’ Finale Down From 2013, ‘NCIS: NOLA’ Hits Low

Fox’s decision to move MasterChef Jr. from Friday to Tuesday for Season 2 continues to pay off. Last night, the second season finale of Gordon Ramsay’s cooking competition at 8 PM drew a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49, up +6% from last week and up +13% from the Season One finale, which aired on Friday. The reality series also drew its largest audience ever, 5.5 million, +14% vs last week and up +34% from last season’s finale.

Also impressive was MasterChef Jr.’s teen delivery which tied the season finale of NBC’s The Voice for the No.1 spot on the night.

Speaking of The Voice, the singing competition wrapped its seventh season with a 3.2 in 18-49 for its 9-11 PM finale, up +39% from last week but down -20% from last Fall’s finale and down a tenth from the spring 2014 closer. Depending whether it will get a bump in the finals, it will be be lowest or tied for lowest rated finale of the talent competition franchise.

It’s been rough sledding for new broadcast holiday specials this year. The latest, NBC’s Elf! Buddy’s Musical Christmas from 8-9 PM, drew a soft 1.3 in 18-49, topped by the evergreen A Charlie Brown Christmas (1.7) on ABC.

The whole night was rough for CBS whose dramas were down from their last originals on Nov. 25, underscoring the disadvantages of the traditional broadcast airing pattern of mixing originals and repeats that hurts appointment viewing. Stalwart NCIS (2.3) was the least affected, down -8%, some of which it may make up in the finals. (It currently ties a season low.) But, facing The Voice finale, NCIS: New Orleans and Person of Interest were down by double digits. NCIS: NOLA (1.9) was down -17% from its most recent original to a series low in Live+same day. POI (1.3) was down -24% to tie a series low.

Everything else last night was repeats. NBC won the night in 18-49 (2.6), CBS was tops in total viewers (13.3 million).
