‘Annie’ Review: Pete Hammond’s Hard-Knock Take On Hip-Hop Reboot

Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Cameron Diaz star in the latest film adaptation of Annie, the durable Broadway musical. This version has been given a hip-hop glaze with new songs from Jay-Z, but for all the changes, as I say in my video review above, I’m not sure the result is going to be any better ‘Tomorrow.’

The movie is directed by Will Gluck, from a screenplay Gluck wrote with Aline Brosh McKenna. It’s based, of course, on Thomas Meehan’s stage play book, and the original Depression-era comic created by Harold Gray. Other cast members include Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale. Producers for the film, which opens this weekend, are Gluck, Jay-Z, Jay Brown, James Lassiter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Tyran Smith and Caleeb Pinkett.

Columbia is distributing the film in the United States. It’s scheduled for a wide release beginning Friday.

Are you a fan of the Annie franchise? Are you planning to see the movie? Let us know.
