‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Fall Finale Ratings Down From 2013, ‘Victoria’s Secret’ & ‘Flash’ Steady

With its Season 2 winter finale last night, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (1.7/5) was full of fanboy salivating reveals and greater connections to the larger Marvel Universe. With that, plus another peek at the upcoming Marvel’s Agent Carter’s January 6 premiere and an after-the-credits scene, the Clark Gregg-led superspy show was down 19% from its Season 1 winter finale on December 10 last year. That 2013 episode ran at 8 PM unlike this year’s midseasoner which was in the show’s new slot of 9 PM. Compared to last week, S.H.I.E.L.D., which has had a roller coaster ride in Live + Same Day results this cycle, was steady with just a 6% dip among adults 18-49.

Part of that was undoubtedly because like last week, Tuesday’s S.H.I.E.L.D. midseason ender had a Christmas special lead-in. Not one that particularly helped the Marvel show. At 8 PM, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (1.1/3) was down a hard 31% from last year. CBS’ 8 PM Christmas special Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (2.8/9) only dipped 7% from last year. With 10.67 million viewers, the tale of Santa’s bright friend was the second most watched show of the night after time slot rival The Voice (2.2/7), which had 10.87 million total viewers. Heading toward next week’s finals, the NBC competition show was down 15% from last week. At 10 PM, up against the Sons Of Anarchy series finale over on FX, S.H.I.E.L.D. lead-out Forever saw the freshman steady with its strong December 2 performance with an 8% slip.

Superspies and reindeer are great, but the real heroes last night were super models and music superstars. Virtually even with last year’s broadcast, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (3.3/10) was easily the highest-rated show of the night – dipping 3% from its December 10, 2013 show. Topping its 10 PM slot in viewers (9.12 million) as well and with Taylor Swift appearing, the 1-hour VSFS also topped the night in the 18-34 with a 3.9 and a very strong 5.1 among W18-34. All of which delivered CBS a 2.6/8 rating for the night and total viewership of 10.004 million and a win in both categories.

Of course, Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn’t the only superhero universe TV series wrapping it up for the year last night. With revelations of its own, and a significant reversal, the winter finale of The CW’s The Flash (1.5/5) certainly gave fans of the DC Comics’ Scarlet Speedster a lot of ponder over the holidays – and this comes a week after the not inconsequential and highly promoted Flash and Arrow crossover episodes. Last night’s winter finale didn’t match that mega-bump of last week but no one could expect that. However, it was surprising that the freshman slipped a mere 6% from last week – especially on such a heavily competitive night. The rest of Season 1 of Flash is back on the TV track on January 20 next year.

As The Flash dipped, the Season 10 winter finale of vet Supernatural (1.1/3) was even and up. That’s even with its S9 winter finale of December 3 last year and up a strong 22% among the key demo and 21% among total viewers from last week. That matches a season high for Supernatural in the 18-49s, and, with 2.81 million tuning in, the most watched episode of the show since October 15, 2010.

Fox’s MasterChef Junior (1.6/5) was even with its December 2 show while comedies New Girl (1.5/4) and The Mindy Project (1.2/3) were steady with 7% and 9% rises each. The rest of NBC’s night post-Voice did not see such good news with Marry Me (1.2/4) slipping 8% and About A Boy (0.9/3) falling 18% to tie a series low in fast nationals. A special NBC News: Angelina Jolie: Unbroken: The Real Story (1.0/3) was soft against the VSFS in its promotion of the Universal-released pic coming out on Christmas Day.
