‘Mike & Molly’ Ratings Down In Return, ‘Castle’ Fall Finale Falls, ‘Jane The Virgin & ‘2 Broke Girls’ Rise

It was a night of beginnings, partial endings and near ends on primetime Monday. The near end was on The Voice (2.5/7) as it whittled things down to the final contestants racing towards the season finale. Last night’s performance show saw the hopefuls belting out two tunes each. With FX’s Sons Of Anarchy wrapping up forever tonight, Matt McAndrew’s choice of a song he first heard on the Kurt Sutter series had an added poignancy.

The top-rated show among adults 18-49 and the most watched overall (10.64 million), The Voice was down 11% from its December 1 episode. According to fast nationals, that’s a performance-show low for the Mark Burnett series, but as Voice commonly sees adjustments in the final nationals, that could certainly change. Lead-out State Of Affairs (1.6/5) had a good night. Week 4 of the Katherine Heigl D.C. series maintained the rebound of Week 3 after a harsh double-digit Week 2 belly flop. All in, NBC won the night among 18-49s with a 2.2/6 and 9.183 million viewers.

Monday’s partial ending came with the Season 7 midseason finale of Castle (1.7/5). With big changes and new offices, the drama was down 19% from its Season 6 midseason ender on November 25 last year. Unlike last night, that show had the benefit of a strong Dancing With The Stars lead-in. On the flip side, compared to last week’s show, Castle was up 13% in the key demo. Part of that was likely some holiday cheer: Castle’s lead-in on Monday was The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.9/5). This year’s debut of the holiday competition show surged 36% compared with its premiere on December 9, 2013.

With that said, ABC’s numbers are likely somewhat inflated as the network saw NFL preemptions in Green Bay, Milwaukee and megamarket Atlanta as the Falcons lost what turned out to be a close game against the Packers. The matchup was also on ESPN’s Monday Night Football and scored a 9.0 overnight rating – up 9% from the last week’s game and the best the weekly game has done since October 27.

The beginning was the 8:30 PM Season 5 premiere of Mike & Molly (1.8/5) on CBS. The Emmy winning Mark Roberts-created comedy fell a smashing 31% from its Season 4 debut (2.6/6) on November 4 last year at 9 PM.  Elsewhere on an originals-packed CBS, the news was better: 2 Broke Girls (2.0/6) was jumped 25% from its last new show on November 24. Newbie Scorpion (2.1/6) and NCIS: LA (1.6/5) were also both up, though nowhere as much. The former saw an 11% rise from its last original two weeks ago, while the latter remained steady with its November 24 show with a 7% rise.

The CW’s Jane The Virgin (0.5/1) was up 25% from its last new show two weeks ago while the fall finale of The Originals (0.6/2) was even with its last original November 24.

Fox was all encores with Gotham and Sleepy Hollow repeats.
