Disney Pairing ‘Frozen’ Spinoff Short With ‘Cinderella’ Next Year

Disney’s keeping the billion-dollar Frozen train chugging along. The studio today revealed plans to debut spinoff animated short Frozen Fever in theaters in March tied to the release of another Disney princess tale, the live-action Cinderella.

Frozen Fever reunites the creative team behind the Oscar-winning 2013 tale about two princess sisters dealing with their feelings, including directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producers Peter Del Vecho and Aimee Scribner, and songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The short picks up after the events of Frozen on Anna’s birthday, when Elsa and Kristoff plan a celebration that’s put at risk by Elsa’s icy powers.

The Frozen franchise is already bringing more advance awareness to the live-action fairytale starring Lily James as Ella (aka Cinderella) opposite Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine (her wicked stepmother), and Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgård, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi and Helena Bonham Carter. Kenneth Branagh directs from a script by Chris Weitz. The pic is slated to open on March 13, and the marketing materials already have a decidedly Frozen-esque feel.

The Frozen franchise has thus far spawned merchandising, soundtrack, book TV, game, and home entertainment spin-offs, including 3 million role-play princess dresses sold and enough youngsters singing “Let It Go” to propel Disney’s Frozen karaoke app to #1 among iPad downloads in 100 countries.
