‘Boyhood’: What Linklater Doesn’t Show Audiences – The Contenders

Boyhood stars Patricia Arquette and Ellar Coltrane talk in the video clip above at our recent Oscar showcase, The Contenders, about writer/director Richard Linklater and their joint 12-year labor of love.

Boyhood Patricia Arquette The ContendersArquette wistfully recalls the filming as a “beautiful family gathering” each year as the cast and crew came together to shoot a few more scenes. More important, she says, are the things Linklater doesn’t show an audience, confounding their expectations in crafting his stories.

After years of shoots, the film finally reached the public eye this summer. It’s gone on to have a tremendous run, passing $24 million in cumulative box office this weekend (somewhere around 10 times what it cost to make). It also was just named Best Picture and more from the New York Film Critics today.

The film also stars Ethan Hawke and Lorelei Linklater. Producers were Linklater, IFC Films CEO Jonathan Sehring, John Sloss and Cathleen Sutherland. IFC distributed the film.
