‘Constantine’ & ‘Amazing Race’ Ratings Down, CW Holiday Specials Even With 2013, CBS Specials Down

On a relatively quite post-Thanksgiving Friday there were some mixed holiday messages on primetime. On NBC, 10 PM’s Constantine (0.9/3) aired the Halloween themed episode that was supposed to be its second show after its October 24 debut. The result was certainly not a treat for the uncertain show. Compared to last week’s surge, this week’s Constantine was down 18% among adults 18-49. The DC Comics based series also saw its viewership dip around 8% from its November 21 airing to 3.22 million last night. Not that Constantine was the only original in the slot to take a double digit hit. With nothing but repeats preceding it, ABC’s 20/20 (1.2/4) fell 20% from last week.

ABC & NBC were tied for the demo top spot last night with a 1.1/4 rating each. As the only network with originals on, That rating was what NBC got on the Friday after Thanksgiving last year – when it was in third place. NBC won this Friday viewershipwise with 5.13 million, just ahead of the 5.07 million ABC had.

If it was Halloween over on NBC the day after Thanksgiving, it was Christmas on The CW. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer (0.4/1) was even with its November 30 broadcast last year. As the big screen Penguins of Madagascar from DreamWorks Animation hit theatres across America, the small screen Merry Madagascar (0.3/1), first aired in 2009, and its lead-in Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special (0.3/1) were also even with their broadcasts last year.

The news wasn’t so good on CBS which saw its 9 PM and 9:30 PM Christmas specials Frosty The Snowman and Yes Virginia melt 35% and 50% from their 2013 airings. Then again, the weaken lead-in of The Amazing Race (1.0/3), with its 17% decline from its November 21 show, wasn’t exactly a gift to the holiday specials.

Starting its fully scheduled night, NBC saw its 8 PM Dateline (1.3/5) slide 13% from last week. Still Dateline was the top rated show overall of the night. Proving resilient against all holiday odds, Grimm (1.2/4) was steady in the demo with last week’s result with a 8% dip. Which meant it was the top rated drama of the relatively non-competitive night. Being that last week saw Grimm up 8% the show is basically even with where it was on November 14 – just before the holidays onslaught began.
