International Emmys: UK’s ‘Utopia’ Wins Best Drama Series

The UK’s Utopia was hailed as Best Drama Series tonight at the 42nd annual International Emmy Awards, and Belgium’s What If? won Best Comedy. Game Of Thrones star Stephen Dillanewon Best Performance by an Actor for UK drama The Tunnel, and Bianca Krijgsman took the actress award for the Netherlands’ The New World. The UK series won awards tonight; no other country took two.

UtopiaNot to be confused with the ill-fated social experiment reality format that was recently cancelled on Fox in the U.S., Utopia is the unrelated drama from Shine’s Kudos that has been very well received in the UK. The Channel 4 series has run for two seasons and follows a small group of people who find themselves in possession of a manuscript of the eponymous cult graphic novel that’s rumored to have predicted the worst disasters of the past century. When targeted by a shadowy organization, the finders are forced to run if they want to survive. HBO is developing a U.S. adaptation with the Gone Girl team of David Fincher and Gillian Flynn.

French/UK co-production The Tunnel is adapted from the original Danish/Swedish crime series Bron, which was also turned into FX’s The Bridge. Critical reception was positive for the TheTunnel Dillanebilingual effort when it debuted in late 2013, and Dillane was praised for his turn as the British police detective who teams with Clémence Poésy’s French inspector as they search for a politically motivated serial killer at the crossroads of France and the UK. Dillane also snagged a Royal Television Society nom for The Tunnel.

Krijgsman’s actress win is something of an upset over Olivia Colman in Broadchurch, whose U.S. remake Gracepoint is airing on Fox.

The winner of Non-English Language US Primetime Program, a new category this year, was Telemundo Internacional’s El Señor De Los Cielos, which airs in the U.S.

As more shows travel the globe in their original versions than ever before, the International Emmys have taken on a new sense of purpose. They’re likely to continue to do so with European co-productions in English and foreign tongues among the most talked-about projects at October’s Mipcom. Last year’s winners included the original French version of The Returned (Les Revenants), which sold in myriad overseas markets and which A&E is remaking for a 2015 debut

Matt Weiner, Christina Hendricks, John SlatteryUpping the star quotient for tonight’s ceremony, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery were on hand at the New York Hilton to present the International Emmy Founders Award to Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner. The International Emmy Directorate Award went to Globo Organization President and CEO Roberto Irineu Marinho. British comic/actor Matt Lucas hosted the event, with presenters including Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Power), Darby Stanchfield (Scandal), Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black), Carrie Preston (True Blood, The Good Wife), Diego Klattenhoff (The Blacklist, Homeland), Reshma Shetty and Ben Shenkman (Royal Pains), Erin Richards (Gotham), Amir Arison (The Blacklist) and Annet Mahendru (The Americans).
