‘Peaky Blinders’ Returning To Netflix For Season 3 As Shelby Empire Expands

EXCLUSIVE: BBC Two has ordered a third series of the Steven Knight-created crime saga Peaky Blinders, and as with Seasons 1 and 2, Netflix now is confirmed to be on board again. The streaming service will air Season 3 in the U.S. after BBC Two transmits; no date has been set. The series from Caryn Mandabach Productions and Tiger Aspect Productions has had two critically acclaimed runs in the UK, with Season Two just concluding on November 6. In the U.S., Netflix began airing Season 1 on September 30 and debuts Season 2 on November 14.

The period drama, which has been nominated for six BAFTAs and won the 2013 Royal Television Society Award for Best Drama Series, is set in Birmingham, England. There, the Shelby family leads the Peaky Blinders – a feared gang named for their practice of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps. The cast to date has included Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, Helen McCrory, and Paul Anderson. Tom Hardy and Noah Taylor joined the series in the second season. Cast for Season 3 is still to be announced.

The first six-episode series focused on the lawless streets of post-WWI Birmingham and the second saw the Shelby family expand its empire in London as the 1920s began to roar. Writer-creator Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises) says, “The story of the Peaky Blinders is just beginning, and in Series 3 life will become more lucrative, more dangerous and more international. Expect births, marriages and deaths and a further expansion of the Shelby empire.”

Peaky Blinders is executive produced by Caryn Mandabach and Jamie Glazebrook for Caryn Mandabach Productions, Will Gould and Frith Tiplady for Tiger Aspect and Matthew Read for BBC Two. The series is distributed internationally by Endemol Worldwide. The Weinstein Co holds U.S. TV rights, having originally optioned three seasons with options for more.

Mandabach is “thrilled that the BBC has allowed us to continue to explore Steve Knight’s brilliant, cinematic vision by giving us a third series of Peaky Blinders. Every step of the way has been a joy for all involved, and I for one can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Gould added: “This is one of the most exciting casts on TV right now, and they’re here because of Steve’s scripts. And with series three commissioned, this is now genuinely a saga in the making. Exciting times ahead.”

Season 3 was commissioned by BBC Two Controller Kim Shillinglaw and Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning.
