Phil Craig Named EVP, Chief Creative Officer At Discovery Networks International

Discovery Communications today named Phil Craig as EVP and Chief Creative Officer for Discovery Networks International.  In the newly created position, Craig will lead the production and development group, which spans five locations: Silver Spring, New York, Miami, London, and Singapore.  He will develop factual and lifestyle content primarily for flagship global networks Discovery Channel and TLC, and will work collaboratively with his US counterparts on content sharing and development. He will report to JB Perrette, President of Discovery Networks International, and will be based in London with a starting date of February 2015.  Craig also will champion development, production and sharing of regionally and locally produced content and formats across Discovery’s five international operating regions.  He will work side by side with Rosemary Newell, DNI’s SVP Programming and Content Operations, who has led the production and development group in the interim phase while the search was conducted.

Craig joins Discovery from Australia’s ABC TV, where he has held the post of Head of Factual since 2012, based in Sydney. During Craig’s time at ABC TV, he drove a number of high-profile initiatives, including Redesign My Brain, which now airs on Discovery Communications’ Science channel as Hack My Brain; and Stop At Nothing, the acclaimed Lance Armstrong documentary which aired as part of the BBC Storyville documentary strand and in numerous other territories. Craig took charge of a major season of WW1 commemoration documentaries and helped target new demographics across multiple platforms.  His recent commission about mental illness, Changing Minds, was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “surely one of the most important programmes in Australian television history.”

Prior to his role at ABC TV, Craig worked for UK independent producer Nutopia, where he took charge of the Discovery landmark series How We Invented The World and was originating producer on hit series The 80s, The Decade That Made Us and How We Got To Now With Stephen Johnson.

The position of Chief Creative Officer combines the roles of Chief Content Officer and Creative Director, Head of Production and Development for Discovery Networks International, previously held by Luis Silberwasser and Julian Bellamy respectively, who left Discovery earlier this year.
