‘Furious 7’ Trailer Hits 100 Million Views Across Facebook

The Furious 7 trailer debuted with a squeal of tires, and fans, on Saturday and hasn’t stopped roaring around social media since, Facebook says, passing 100 million views in the 48 hours since it first premiered on the site.

More than a quarter of those views happened on the film’s own Facebook Page, 27.8 million and counting, along with 1 million shares by fans. But the film’s bevy of socially savvy stars helped a lot too, with Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and the page for the late Paul Walker all posting the video for their own big online fan bases.

Facebook is pushing itself to Hollywood as a better alternative than Google’s YouTube for marketing video online, and recent user data suggests that Facebook is making significant progress against the longtime king of online video.

For Furious 7, the latest installment in Universal’s hugely successful The Fast & The Furious franchise, the studio debuted the movie’s official title a week earlier. Each day leading up to Saturday, it released another 7-second video of behind-the-scenes images. Then on Saturday, corporate sibling E! Entertainment broadcast an hourlong special on the trailer unveiling simultaneously with a runup on Facebook itself. Within an hour of the debut, Facebook said the trailer had been viewed more than 1 million times on the movie’s own page. It has accelerated since then.
