UPDATE, writethru: There remains plenty of action at the international box office as we head into the dog days of summer and with fewer wide releases to come. This past week and weekend includes milestones aplenty for such films as Thor: Love And Thunder, Minions: The Rise Of Gru, Jurassic World Dominion, and the seemingly unstoppable Top Gun: Maverick. But it’s not a free-for-all as audiences now appear more discerning amid the recent barrage of big-ticket titles — adding to that, there is a very threatening heatwave across European majors which is complicating matters on several levels.
Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Love And Thunder led the international box office weekend in its sophomore session, with an added $60.1M from 47 material markets. The global cume is thisclose to $500M with $498M through Sunday. The overseas drop was 59% from last weekend. That’s a skosh lower than Spider-Man: No Way Home’s 60% sophomore dip (though that movie was a holiday release) and deeper than Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (-56%) in the same suite of markets for the second frame.
Regionally, Asia-Pacific saw the biggest slide on Thor 4 (-64%), Europe/Middle East/Africa was down 56% and Latin America 53%.
Should we be celebrating or lamenting this major Marvel entry — $500M is nothing to sniff at across two weekends — but it is certainly being dinged by reviews, and has competition from a continuously surging Top Gun: Maverick which took back PLFs this session in some markets. Also, a codicil for all films right now, comps are tough since currency exchange rates have gone haywire. The dollar and the euro are essentially at parity. There’s runway ahead for Thor and the gang, but it’s iffy.
Overall, with this weekend, Disney has crossed $2B in global box office for 2022 so far ($2.102B).
Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru, meanwhile, has now crossed $500M worldwide, becoming the 8th Illumination movie to the milestone and now the biggest animated picture of the pandemic. The offshore cume is $270.1M for a running global total of $532.7M through Sunday.
As for Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick, there’s just no stopping this hypersonic movie. It added $19.2M in 65 markets this weekend — it’s 8th — for an offshore cume of $619.4M. The hold was -22% and the global cume is now $1,247.4M. As we reported on Friday, the Tom Cruise-starrer is Paramount’s biggest worldwide release ever.
Also in milestones, Uni’s other mega-movie currently out in theaters, Jurassic World Dominion, is stomping past $900M global today, making it the 3rd film of 2022 to the mark. The offshore cume to date is an estimated $542.8M with worldwide at $902.5M. JWD also continues to be the biggest Hollywood title of the year in China where it has crossed RMB 1B to stand at $150M. The entire Jurassic franchise will soon cross $6B global.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Digging further into Thor’s $60.1M sophomore frame overseas, new opener France launched the film at No. 1 with $8.1M including previews, which is 16% ahead of Ragnarok.
The movie held No. 1 in the majority of markets including the UK, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand. Central America, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa and Turkey.
In India and Spain, it is the top non-local film (in the latter, Sony released threequel Padre No Hay Mas Que Uno 3 to a leading $3.1M).
In the Philippines, Love and Thunder is the 2nd highest grossing release of the pandemic.
The best holds were seen in Uruguay (-16%), South Africa (-37%), Finland (-42%), Germany (-44%), Denmark (-44%), Chile (-44%), Bolivia (-47%), Austria (-48%), Sweden (-48%) and Peru (-49%).
The Top 10 markets to date are the UK ($24.9M), Australia ($21.8M), Korea ($21M), Mexico ($19M), India ($14.5M), Brazil ($13.2M), Indonesia ($10.6M), Germany ($10.3M), France ($8.1M) and Italy ($7.7M).
The IMAX total to date is $34.7M global, including $14.2M international.
Malaysia and Ukraine open this weekend.
MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU
Easily grooving past the $500M mark globally, Universal/Illumination’s origins story now has a worldwide estimated cume of $532.7M through Sunday. In 80 offshore markets, the total is $270.1M after a $44.4M weekend. Demonstrating the bananas draw of movies from Chris Meledandri’s Illumination, this is the studio’s 8th movie to hit the five-century milestone and also the biggest animated release of the pandemic in 43 markets including Australia (where it is also Illumination’s top title ever), Brazil, Germany, Mexico and Spain.
Elsewhere, it’s the top animated movie ever in Vietnam, Argentina and Venezuela.
Japan was new this session with a No. 2 start of $4.6M. Weather impacted the opening day, while Saturday grew 254% as the market enters a holiday Monday.
Gru is currently running 13% below Minions at the same point and 5% ahead of Despicable Me 3 in like-for-likes.
The top markets to date are Mexico ($28.1M), UK ($27.6M), Australia ($25M), Germany ($16.4M) and Spain ($12.5M).
Korea opens this week.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
Off just 22% from last session, TGM grossed $19.2M in 65 markets to lift the offshore cume to $619.4M and $1,247.4M global.
Key results from the session include Korea which fell just 12% and ranked No. 1, taking the local cume to $47.2M after four frames.
Japan continues to deliver with an 8th frame down 30% and a cume of $67.7M. Australia also had a terrific hold of -22% for a $57.2M cume.
The UK leads all market totals with $89.7M, followed by Japan, Australia, France ($46.8M) and Korea.
Warner Bros’ rocker added $9.8M in 72 markets this session, including openings in Mexico, Brazil and Korea. The holdover markets were down just 32% including strong staying power in Denmark (-15%), Spain (-20%), Australia (-25%), the UK (-27%), New Zealand (-29%) Italy (-30%), Holland (-33%), Japan (-36%) and Germany (-39%).
The international cume to date is now $79.4M for a worldwide total of $185.6M.
Mexico debuted to $1.6M on 1,360 screens, making it the biggest opening for a Baz Luhrmann film as well as coming in 132% over Rocketman and 61% ahead of A Star Is Born. Brazil also came in as the biggest opening for a Luhrmann title with $970K on 825 screens. The film is tracking ahead of Rocketman by 6%.
Korea opened to $443k, 8% behind Rocketman with positive reviews and word of mouth; exhibitor CGV has a 95% rating on it. Premium formats are performing well with ScreenX and Dolby Cinema representing 9% and 6% of the total box office respectively.
The top markets to date are the UK ($19.7M), Australia ($17.1M), France ($5.8M), Germany ($3.8M), Japan ($3.5M), Holland ($2.9M), Spain ($2.8M), Italy ($2.5M), New Zealand ($2.2M) and Mexico ($1.6M).
JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION
The 6th and 7th weekend overseas for JWD added $8.4M, a 47% drop with international box office now at $542.8M and global crossing $900M for $902.5M. This week, the offshore cume will surpass Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.
As noted above, China has crossed $150M while 26% of cinemas in Shanghai remain closed. Holds were great in Germany (-29%) and Mexico (-19%). The former’s gross is $20.8M, in line with Fallen Kingdom at the same point, while the latter is now at $42.7M to over take the lifetime of Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. Australia brought Dominion into the Top 10 Universal releases of all time with a $24.2M cume to date.
The UK total through Sunday is $39.4M and Spain has reached $16.2M. Japan is still on deck for July 29.
MISC UPDATED CUMES/NOTABLE
The Black Phone (UNI): $3.3M intl weekend (54 markets); $42.5M intl cume/$114.6M global
Lightyear (DIS): $2.7M intl weekend (24 markets); $97.5M intl cume/$213M global
In local-language fare, Sony’s Padre No Hay Mas Que Uno 3 scored the biggest opening for a homegrown title since 2016 with $3.1M. The launch weekend of the third chapter in the comedy franchise bested the previous installment by 83% and the original by 77%.
A trio of Chinese titles led box office there with No. 1 holdover Detectives Vs Sleuths adding RMB 123M for a cume through Sunday of $58.5M. Lighting Up The Stars continued its strong run with a total of $209M to date and new entry Mozart From Space came in third with RMB 110M ($16.3M).
Toho’s Kingdom 2 opened No. 1 in Japan, and claimed the 3rd highest Japanese live-action debut ever for IMAX.
