EXCLUSIVE: Mad Men alumna January Jones is set to play a lead opposite Kaya Scodelario in Spinning Out, Netflix’s upcoming drama series set in the world of competitive figure skating.

Created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes), a former competitive figure skater herself, Spinning Out centers on Kat Baker (Scodelario), an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with talented bad-boy partner Justin (Evan Roderick), she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and Justin will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realizing their Olympic dream.

Jones will play Carol Baker, Kat (Scodelario) and Serena’s (Willow Shields) mother. Carol is a former high-level figure skater who had to forfeit her dreams when she became pregnant with her oldest daughter at a young age. The head of the Baker family, Carol fiercely pushes both her girls to become Olympians in order to fulfill the dream she could never achieve herself. Simultaneously, she struggles with personal demons that threaten to ruin her relationship with her daughters, the thing she values about all else.

Previously announced cast also includes Johnny Weir as Gabe, Sarah Wright Olsen as Mandy, Will Kemp as Mitch, Kaitlyn Leeb as Leah, Amanda Zhou as Jenn, and Mitchell Edwards as Marcus.

Stratton and Lara Olsen executive produce and serve as co-showrunners on the series. Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold executive produce via Safehouse Pictures. The company’s Matt Schwartz serves as co-executive producer. Liz Allen (Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists) will direct and executive produce the pilot and second episode.

Jones is best known for her portrayal of Betty Draper in AMC’s acclaimed series Mad Men, a role which earned her an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. She most recently co-starred as Melissa in Fox’s comedy series The Last Man on Earth, and she has a role on the upcoming Ryan Murphy Netflix series The Politician. Her film credits include Good Kill, opposite Ethan Hawke and Sweetwater, opposite Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs.
