Giving an emotional thank you to her in attendance parents and already a winner at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ceremony back in 2006 for Best Supporting Actress for Grey’s Anatomy, Oh is now the first performer of Asian heritage to win more than one Golden Globes. The Canadian-born actress shattered one barrier even before tonight’s show started with the announcement last year that she would be co-hosting with Andy Samberg. Oh is the first person of Asian decent to ever host the event. Watch her speech above.
For her performance as the MI5 officer on the hunt for a female assassin piling up bodies all over Europe, Oh is the second women of Asian background to win the Best Actress Golden Globe. Back in 1981 at the 38th Globes, Japanese actress Yoko Shimada was the winner for her performance as Mariko in NBC’s Shōgun.
Add to that, Oh’s victory for the renewed and acclaimed BBC America series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge also makes her the fourth co-host of the Globes to win while helping fronting the Beverly Hilton set show. While the Globes didn’t officially have host regularly until 2010, in 1984 presenters John Forsythe and Julie Walters won for Dynasty and Educating Rita respectively. In 2014, repeat co-host and nominee Amy Poehler snagged the Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series: Musical or Comedy for Parks & Recreation.
Of course, in the rush of the glorious moment that history might not have been the first thing that came to Oh’s mind tonight as she admitted to Samberg afterwards onstage that she had no idea what was going on.
The head of BBC America, however, was both in the moment and looking towards the horizon with the win for Oh and the series, which was Deadline’s number #2 best new TV show of 2018 – with an announcement of the show’s return and congrats for its star.
“We’re are bursting with excitement to see Sandra Oh receive this incredible recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press,” said Sarah Barnett, President of Entertainment Networks for AMC Networks on Sunday. “Killing Eve has captivated both fans and critics, and Sandra has shown once again that she is one of the most accomplished actors of her generation, someone audiences will wholeheartedly follow wherever she goes. It’s not too long now before everyone gets to see the next extraordinary season unfold when Killing Eve returns to BBC America on April 7th.”
