Samantha Bee opened Full Frontal celebrating House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s smackdown of President Donald Trump over his SOTU address.
“Dude I know it’s driving you crazy that a woman turned you down, but this is a point in your life that you’re actually going to have to learn that ‘no’ means ‘no’,” the TBS star told Trump.
“There will be no grabbing of this podium until Nancy is good and ready.”
Meanwhile Trump’s Border Wall government shutdown is getting more dire, with reports of exhausted, stressed out air traffic controllers, etc.
“Donald Trump’s raging wall boner may be the fountainhead of this shutdown, but the true bunghole cork preventing a functioning government is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,” Bee blasted.
“Mitch rules Congress with an iron flipper; he could end this, but he’s hoping no one notices that.”
Thursday he will finally allow two bills to the Senate floor, but neither is expected to pass. The Dem bill funds the federal government through February 8 but does not give Trump his wall. The GOP bill gives Trump his wall and restricts rights of some refugees, so Dems “probably” won’t vote for it, Bee said, while adding “you never know – they’re Democrats.”
The Dem bill is virtually identical to one the Senate approved in December, which also did not have border wall funding. “Senate Republicans don’t give a shit about that wall; they’re only keeping the government shut down because that’s what the President wants. It’s the same reason they changed our national bird to the chicken nugget,” she cheap-shotted.
Congress is a co-equal branch of government and it is not McConnell’s job “to bend the Senate to the President’s whim,” Bee scolded. “It’s his job to help it govern.”
“We really need Congress to stand up here. It is impossible to compromise with Trump because there is no reason to believe he will do anything he says he will,” she added.
Governing involves compromise, but it’s tough for Dems to compromise with someone so untrustworthy, Bee said.
“Let me explain it in terms everyone is going to understand: Giving Donald Trump $5B for a wall in 2019 would be like investing in the Fyre Festival in 2016.”
