EXCLUSIVE: I have learned that Daniel Zovatto (Here and Now, Fear the Walking Dead) has been tapped for a lead role in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a followup to Penny Dreadful from the original series’ creator, writer and executive producer John Logan.
A spiritual descendant of the story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter employ a new vision, new characters and storylines. It opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.
I hear Zovatto will play Tiago. While City of Angels is being positioned as an ensemble series, Tiago is considered the story’s male protagonist. LAPD’s first Mexican-American detective, Tiago grapples with racism, childhood trauma, and faith issues in 1938 Los Angeles.
Logan is the series’ creator, writer and executive producer. Michael Aguilar also executive produces, along with the original’s EPs Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris, both of Neal Street Productions. Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions will produce, and James Bagley will serve as co-executive producer.
Zovatto recently starred as Ramon in Alan Ball’s HBO drama series Here and Now. His series credits also include arcs on Fear the Walking Dead and Revenge. He also starred in the horror thriller Don’t Breathe from Screen Gems and Good Universe and had roles in Lady Bird, Newness, Laggies, and It Follows. Zovatto, who just wrapped Flinch for Cameron Van-Hoy and Heavy opposite Sophie Turner, is repped by CAA, Luber Roklin Entertainment and attorney Jeff Bernstein.
