Michael Douglas Says “Streaming Has Made Television Much More Acceptable To Film People” – Golden Globes Backstage

“This is pretty special,” said multi-Golden Globes winner Michael Douglas, speaking backstage after his win for lead actor in a comedy series in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. The series also won for Best Comedy Series on Sunday at the 76th annual awards show.

“When Chuck Lorre sent me his script, I wasn’t thinking about streaming or getting involved, but it was such a good script and anybody who says ‘I find getting old funny,’ I want to drink that Kool-Aid,” Douglas said.

While not new to the comedy game, the actor admitted it wasn’t his strongest area and welcomed the challenge to “develop” his “comedic chops.” “I think comedy is much more difficult than drama,” he said.

Like he did onstage during his acceptance speech, Douglas made sure to acknowledge his father, acting icon Kirk Douglas, backstage, “because he more than anyone says ‘you’re getting an award for being funny, ha’,” he joked.

Douglas also touched on the medium of streaming and how the platform has transformed his career and the industry.

“Streaming has made television much more acceptable to film people,” he said. “That’s why you’re seeing so many film actors go in… That’s why now you’re seeing situations like The Kominsky Method, a half-hour comedy which can be 25 minutes long or 40 minutes long. You can say anything you want. There are no commercials. It’s as close as you can get to a short film. For me, at this point in my career and at my age, this is fantastic. I love it.”
