“Your job is to put together a team you trust,” Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) tells Mack (Henry Simmons), S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new Director, in the first Season 6 trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “If you think about everything you’re up against all at once, you’ll crack.” Sage advice — especially from a ghost.

Just after those words are spoken in this first look at the upcoming new episodes, a none-too-subtle graphic takes over the screen: AGENT COULSON IS DEAD. The ailing team leader last was seen at the end of the Season 5 finale, titled “The End,” retiring to Tahiti to spend his final days.

Also touched on in the new trailer for ABC’s superhero tale is the fate of Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) — who, we are reminded, is “frozen out in deep space somewhere.” But before you can say “space needle in a haystack,” we are comforted by the voice-over: “I have not a single doubt you will find him.” Then it’s on to some butt-kicking and a teaser you’ll have to see for yourself.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and newly promoted regular Jeff Ward.

At its upfront after the 2018-19 season, ABC said it was moving Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to a summer run for the first time. Then in November it announced a Season 7 renewal for the show well ahead of that sixth-season bow.

Produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, the series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb. Have a look at the trailer above, and tell us what you think. Is Coulson really a stiff?
