IMAX is rolling out its ‘Enhanced’ home ent content via partnerships with streamers Tencent Video (China), FandangoNow (U.S.) and Rakuten TV (Europe), and device partners Arcam, Elite, Integra, Lexicon, Onkyo, Pioneer, TCL and Trinnov.
Among first movies made available in the program will be Sony’s Venom and Alpha. Content is due to roll out on streaming services and some Sony Bravia TVs this year. IMAX formatted docs Journey To The South Pacific and A Beautiful Planet to the Enhanced format last year.
The home ent spec, announced in September 2018, combines digitally re-mastered 4K HDR content with audio tech from Xperi subsidairy DTS. The two tech firms partnered with Hollywood sound mixers to use a variant of the DTS:X codec tech integrated in home audio equipment in a bid to replicate IMAX sound experience. A/V receivers from Sony and Denon and Marantz, and content collaborations with Sony and Paramount were announced at launch.
