EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is on the verge of pulling off a neat trick: a deal sources place around $2 million for The Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary. The Ben Berman-directed film premiered last Friday at The MARC, competing in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film charts the changing journey for Berman after he began a docu called The Amazing Johnathan, about a uniquely deranged magician who built a career out of shock and deception in the 1980s. After Johnathan is diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and given one year to live, he’s forced to retire his act and Berman’s film seemed kaput. Three years later, Johnathan didn’t die, and Berman filmed the illusionist on an epic comeback tour. And then things happened that led the filmmaker to question what is truth and what is illusion.
Multiple suitors were in the mix.
Pic was produced by Cold Iron Pictures, with Miranda Bailey, Berman, Russell Groves, Amanda Marshall, Jacob Perlin and Anonymous Content. The exec producers are Jason Beck, Kirk Johnson and Jon Mugar.
Deal was brokered by Submarine’s Josh Braun, with Verve and ICM Partners.
Hulu earlier this week teamed with NEON for the zombie comedy Little Monsters, with Black Panther‘s Lupita Nyong’o starring.
