“You think these fools, these rich white dudes, gonna let the sexiest sport fall by the wayside?” That’s a question posed by sports agent Ray Burke to his client as he tries to get a pro basketball strike settled in the trailer for High Flying Bird, Steven Soderbergh’s new Netflix movie. “Football is fun,” he adds, “but it don’t move sneakers. To move merch and inspire rap lyrics, they need your services.”

As the labor action continues, arenas are empty and millions of dollars are squandered, Burke (Moonlight‘s André Holland) finds himself caught in the faceoff between the league and the players. His career is on the line, but Ray is playing for higher stakes. With only 72 hours to pull off a daring plan, he outmaneuvers all the power players as he uncovers a loophole that could change the game forever. The outcome raises questions of who owns the game – and who ought to.

Zazie Beetz, Melvin Gregg, Sonja Sohn, Zachary Quinto, Kyle MacLachlan and Bill Duke co-star in High Flying Bird, which features appearances by NBA players Reggie Jackson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Donovan Mitchell. Soderbergh helmed from a script by Oscar-winning Moonlight co-writer Tarell Alvin McCraney.

The film will get a sneak at Slamdance this month — where Soderbergh will receive the fest’s Founders Award — before it starts streaming February 8 on Netflix. Have a look at the trailer above and key art below, and tell us what you think.
