Among those interviewed are a man who was was 17 in 1997 when he says he and Singer had sex at a party at the director’s house; another says he was 15 that same year, when he and Singer had sex in a Beverly Hills mansion. Both men say Singer, who was then in his early 30s, knew they were under 18, the age of consent in California. Another of the men, Victor Valdovinos, says he was a 13-year-old extra on the set of movie Apt Pupil when Singer fondled his genitals.
The magazine says it spent 12 months investigating the allegations against the Bohemian Rhapsody and X-Men director, speaking to “more than 50 sources.” Those interviewed told the Atlantic the experiences “left them psychologically damaged, with substance-abuse problems, depression, and PTSD.”
The article’s writers Alex French and Maximillian Potter comment in the piece, “The portrait of Singer that emerges is of a troubled man who surrounded himself with vulnerable teenage boys, many of them estranged from their families. Their accounts suggest that Singer didn’t act alone; he was aided by friends and associates who brought him young men. And he was abetted, in a less direct way, by an industry in which a record of producing hits confers immense power: Many of the sources we interviewed insisted, out of fear of damaging their own career, that we withhold their name, even as they expressed dismay at the behavior they’d witnessed.”
Singer knew an article was coming. He wrote an Instagram post in October that read, in part, “I have known for some time that [there may be] a negative article about me. They have contacted my friends, colleagues and people I don’t even know. In today’s climate where people’s careers are being harmed by mere accusations, what [these reporters are] attempting to do is a reckless disregard for the truth, making assumptions that are fictional and irresponsible.”
Singer was fired two weeks before the end of production on Oscar-nominee Bohemian Rhapsody in December 2017. He remains the credited director, but was not nominated, and was conspicuously absent from winners’ speeches at the Golden Globes. He is next scheduled to direct action pic Red Sonja (the comic book superhero is a rape victim) for Millennium Films.
Cesar Sanchez-Guzman sued the filmmaker in 2017, claiming Singer raped him on a yacht in 2003. Singer has denied the allegation, and the case is pending. In 2014, Michael Egan sued Singer, alleging the filmmaker had raped him several times in Hawaii in 1999, when Egan was 17. That case was dropped after discrepancies emerged in Egan’s testimony.
