UPDATE, 10:23 AM: As cleaners removed the last debris from the parties that went late into the wet night, the final numbers for the 76th Golden Globe Awards are now in – and they are a mixed bag for NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
That’s up 4% in the key demo from the six year low of last year’s Seth Meyers fronted Globes but down 2% in total audience from 2018.
What makes the whole thing even more tainted is that this year’s Globes directly followed a strategically situated massively watched NFL Wild Card playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears. A rare gift of a game that by all reasonable expectations should have handed over a big bounce to the awards show, not basically kept it flat with last year.

While bucking the double digit viewership decline trend that has hobbled the likes of the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys in recent years and matching the demo debut of the short lived Roseanne revival of last March, there is little victory for the Globes to be claimed out of gaining virtually no traction last night. As we saw last year with Fox’s Wild Card game spillover programming lifting numbers for the other shows on the Rupert Murdoch owned nets or any Super Bowl post-game preview or launch, part of any broadcaster’s overall plan is have pro football’s still not inconsiderable muscle propelling the programming around it, even if if is mere scraps.
As peeved viewers in the Windy City processed the end of their teams playoff dreams and Philly fans celebrated, there was none of that lift for this year’s Globes – a reality that may concern NBC and producers dick clark productions going forward.
PREVIOUSLY, 6:32 AM: Last night’s 76th Golden Globe Awards saw big surprises like Bohemian Rhapsody’s big win for Best Motion Picture, Drama, a big send off for FX’s The Americans, flu shots, a trio of victories for Green Book, some history made by co-host Sandra Oh and a Saturday Night Live alum mock marriage proposal.
Clocking in at around three hours and twenty minutes and coming right after a NFL Wild Card playoff game that threatened to run long, the Killing Eve star and Andy Samberg fronted ceremony was a little bit more traditional than usual and never even mentioned Donald Trump once. Kicking off the awards season, the omission of the often Hollywood reviled former Celebrity Apprentice host was despite pointed political remarks by Vice star Christian Bale, Roma director Alfonso Cuaron and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story executive producer Brad Simpson.
Following the six-year ratings low of last year’s Seth Meyers hosted Globes, NBC were looking for a win in the numbers. However, on a Sunday of little primetime competition on broadcast or cable and the big lead-in of that Philadelphia Eagles’ close win over the Chicago Bears, it looks like the Comcast-owned net were denied.
The 76th Golden Globes snared a 12.7/21in metered market results.
That’s down 5% from the early metrics of 75th annual Golden Globes of January 7, 2018, which were basically even with the 2017 Jimmy Fallon hosted ceremony. Tracking across the years, last night’s Globes were the lowest in metered markets since the 2015 ceremony when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were co-hosts for their third and final stint.
In the final ratings, the 2018 Globes hoisted a 5.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 19.0 million viewers, a double digit demo decline from 2017 and the worst the Hollywood Foreign Press Association event had done since 2012.
Though a dip from last year, one thing that perhaps makes the 2019 ratings result a bit easier to digest for the Globes and the night winning NBC is that they come in an environment that has seen NFL ratings inch back up and the Emmys and the Oscars crumble to all time lows over the last year. Whether that ends up being the case here is still TBD, though right now, with 55 markets reporting, the Globes and that well watched NFL game are looking to be handing NBC the best metered market result of any Sunday since the Oscars back in March.
We’ll update will more Globes ratings as they become available as well as how the likes of Shark Tank, Family Guy and NCIS did last night too.
