EXCLUSIVE: Black Sails alum Ray Stevenson has been cast as one of the male leads opposite Poppy Montgomery, joining previously cast Desmond Chiam, in Reef Break, ABC’s 13-episode summer crime drama. Montgomery also executive produces the series, which is based on her idea, along with Ken Sanzel, who will write as well as serve as showrunner.
Reef Break originated at ABC Studios International and was ordered to series by France’s M6 in May. ABC picked it up for a summer run in August, with U.S.-based ABC Studios coming on board to-produce alongside ABC Studios International in partnership with M6.
Reef Break is described as a sexy, action-packed drama starring Montgomery as Cat Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise. Impulsive, reckless and irresistible, Cat’s less-than-perfect past gives her an instinctive gift for understanding crime and criminals as she becomes enmeshed in fast-paced, high-octane adventures and island intrigue.
Stevenson plays Jake. A man’s man, a bit down on his luck at the moment, Jake Elliot prefers the beach bum lifestyle, even if he is a federal agent. Preferring to lay low near the water, Jake is rarely at the office. He’s got a history with Cat, and the two aren’t completely emotionally done with each other.
Stevenson recurred as iconic pirate Blackbeard on the third season of Starz’s Black Sails. Known for his role as Marcus in Divergent and sequel Insurgent, Stevenson most recently recurred as Det. Supt. Edward Benton in Rellik on Cinemax. His previous credits also include HBO/BBC series Rome, and Showtime’s Dexter. He’s repped by ICM Partners, Independent in the UK and attorney Alan Wertheimer.
