Refresh for updates Hollywood recalled director and actress Penny Marshall today as a friend, a trailblazer and a comedy icon. Actors, directors and others from film and television took to social media to remember the pioneering actress-turned-director who gave us memorable films such as A League of Their Own, Big, and Awakenings.
Rob Reiner, Marshall’s ex-husband, tweeted: “I loved Penny. I grew up with her. She was born with a great gift. She was born with a funnybone and the instinct of how to use it. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funnybone. I will miss her.”
Tom Hanks, star of Marshall’s Big, took to Twitter to pay his respects. “Goodbye, Penny,” he wrote. “Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx.”

In a statement given to Deadline Robert De Niro, who starred in Awakenings said, “Penny will be missed. May she Rest in Peace.”
Rosie O’Donnell, who starred in Marshall’s A League of Their Own tweeted a 1996 Kmart commercial they did together and wrote, “Simply heartbroken #ripPENNY.”
Mark Wahlberg and Carole King, both of whom worked with Marshall, remembered their friend, as did Billy Crystal, Ava DuVernay and Viola Davis, among many others. Actress Billie Lourd shared a photo on Instagram of her mother Carrie Fisher with Marshall.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk also released a statement: “Penny Marshall, a great friend to animals, was determined in her last years to end Wayne State University’s cruel experiments on dogs, including one named Laverne in her honor. PETA will pay tribute to her legacy of kindness by urging the school to retire these dogs and end the experiments, as she wished.”
Kevin Smith, who cites A League of Their Own as one of his favorite movies, tweeted: “Farewell to the lady I imitated as a kid before becoming her neighbor years later, legendary sitcom star and BIG director Penny Marshall.”
