EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a promising update on an intriguing project: Ozark’s Julia Garner is in negotiations to play the lead in Kitty Green’s (Casting JonBenet) upcoming movie charting a day in the life of one of Harvey Weinstein’s assistants.
Due to shoot in New York next year, the as-yet-untitled narrative feature is being produced by the same team that made Green’s acclaimed documentary Casting JonBenet: Scott Macaulay, and James Schamus.
Weinstein’s former assistants have spoken out about various types of improper conduct by the film mogul. We spoke to one of them earlier this year. Multiple women, including assistants, have alleged sexual harassment by him, claims Weinstein has denied.

Writer-director Green is said to have spent more than a year researching public records and documents, and conducting scores of interviews, for the project. Macaulay previously described it as “a work of profound empathy, crafted to allow our audience to wholly identify with its heroine and the all-too common inequities she faces.”
Brokeback Mountain producer and former Focus Features CEO Schamus added when the project was announced in September, “Kitty Green understands that the exercise of corporate bureaucratic power – so often structured against women and insidiously mobilized without fanfare against a vulnerable workforce – is its own kind of horror, and to understand fully Harvey Weinstein’s depredations requires knowing the setting that made them possible to continue for so long. In doing so, Kitty is creating a cinematic experience like no other before it.”
Garner’s star is high right now following her SAG best actress award nomination yesterday for Netflix’s hit show Ozark. The Martha Marcy May Marlene and Waco actress has built up a strong resume, not least in characters suffering the effects of toxic masculinity, and this latest gig looks to continue in that vein. Recent shows also include The Americans, Maniac and Dirty John.
This is one of a handful of movies in the works about Weinstein. Embankment Films is handling documentary Weinstein (formerly Citizen Harvey); Vertical Entertainment has U.S. rights to Barry Avrich’s doc The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret; and Megan Ellison and Brad Pitt scored screen rights to Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s series of New York Times articles which were key to exploding the Weinstein scandal.
Garner is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Sloane Offer.
