The day after President Trump pranked former President Barack Obama by retweeting his 2011 quote calling for taking on illegal immigration, The Art of the Deal co-author had his own ghost of comments past haunting him.
“If you say, ‘Who gets fired?’ it always has to be the top,” Trump said on an episode of Fox & Friends that aired in September 2013 (comments at the 4:23 mark on the video above). “I mean, problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top. The president’s the leader. He’s to get everyone in a room and he’s got to lead.”
Lemon, well-known for his disdain for the president, had a deadpan response after airing the clip. “Starts from the top. If anyone should get fired, the president. Hmmm.”
He added: “Donald Trump suggesting that President Barack Obama should have been fired for a government shutdown. Priceless.”
The 2013 government shutdown over budgeting during the Obama administration lasted from Oct. 1-17 and centered on the Republican and Democrat divide over the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare. That impasse ended when Congress passed a bill suspending the debt limit until Feb. 2014, in effect kicking the can down the road.
Lemon has been on a roll with found footage. Last week, he aired a clip of Trump bragging on campaign finance, an issue that has been in the news lately thanks to the president’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, who has been sentenced to three years in prison for several criminal charges, including violating campaign finance laws.
