There will be no Season 5 for Fox’s The Last Man on Earth, starring Will Forte, which is being canceled after four seasons. The show is one of three comedy series canceled by Fox today, along with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mick.
The Last Man on Earth quickly established a cult following but was never able to grow beyond niche appeal. Still, boosted by DVR viewing, the quirky comedy averaged a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating in Live+7, on par with The Mick and freshman LA to Vegas, which had been looking promising for renewal. The high-concept comedy already cheated cancellation once, clinching a last-minute renewal last year.
Among fans who lamented The Last Man On Earth’s cancellation, along with that of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was Late Night‘s Seth Meyers, who, like Last Man and Brooklyn‘s stars, Will Forte and Andy Samberg, respectively, is a Saturday Night Live alum.
From writer-producer Will Forte and directors/producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, The Last Man on Earth was a straight-to-series order. It chronicled the life and adventures of an average guy who inadvertently becomes humanity’s last hope. After a deadly virus swept the planet in 2020, only one man was left on Earth: Tandy (fka Phil) Miller (Forte). Having searched the country in his RV for other survivors, Tandy returned to his hometown of Tucson, where, slowly but surely, a handful of other survivors found him. In Season 4, the survivors continued their sojourn through a post-virus world, setting sail toward Mexico to avoid nuclear fallout.
Here is co-star Mary Steenburgen’s reaction to the cancellation:
During its run, the series received five Emmy nominations, including two lead actor noms for Forte, along with Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Forte) and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Lord and Miller).
The Last Man On Earth was produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Forte, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Seth Cohen, Erik Durbin and Tim McAuliffe serve as executive producers.
With the show’s cancellation, Fox will only have one “Last Man” on the schedule next season, the revival of Last Man Standing.
