Last week, the New Hollywood Podcast welcomed Dear White People creator Justin Simien to the studio and this week, we welcomed Logan Browning, who plays the outspoken and woke Sam on the Netflix series. It looks like May is Dear White People month for New Hollywood.
In the satirical series that skewers and dissects identity politics, Browning steps into the role of the aforementioned Sam. In the first season, we saw her navigate as a Black activist at the majority white Winchester University, a fictitious Ivy League school. The role hit close to home for the actress who once attended Vanderbilt. She took over the role from Tessa Thompson, who starred in Simien’s 2014 movie on which the show is based.
The second season dives deeper into the character and she definitely goes through the ringer. Her narrative in the sophomore season will definitely have fans of the show swimming in their feelings. In addition to talking about how she made the role her own, Browning shared her Hollywood journey and shared her thoughts about the overlooked issue of colorism in industry. And of course, we unpacked Childish Gambino’s (a.k.a. Donald Glover) music video for “This Is America” and somehow Kanye folded himself into our conversation once again.
