Disappointing — yet unsurprising — news for the fans behind the #SaveLucifer campaign. The CW president Mark Pedowitz indicated that the network is not interested in picking up the series following its cancellation by Fox last week.
“We have not had conversations, there have been no discussions,” he said during a CW upfront press call. “We have been focused on own development, we are happy with what we have.”
Shortly after Fox announced there would no fourth season of the Tom Ellis-starring drama, from the CW sister studio Warner Bros. TV, the #SaveLucifer campaign was launched, with fan reaction to the cancellation erupting on social media.
The CW previously rescued cancelled CBS DC drama Supergirl and picked up Black Lightning when it was not ordered to pilot by Fox (both Supergirl and Black Lightning also are produced by WBTV), but Lucifer is probably a little old for the CW, which already has a ton of DC series. The network also didn’t pick up Constantine when it was cancelled by NBC. Both Lucifer and Constantine are based on characters from DC’s Vertigo imprint and not part of the Arrow universe.
WBTV had been exploring finding a new home for Lucifer with pitches to steaming services and premium cable networks. Suitable prospects include Hulu, which owns SVOD rights to the series, and Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC Universe digital platform.
