Mr. Mercedes‘ Tessa Ferrer and Jay Paulson (Mad Men) have joined the cast of Catch-22, Hulu’s high-profile limited series co-starring and directed by George Clooney, from Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie and Christopher Abbott star.
Based on Joseph Heller’s novel, Catch-22 follows Captain John Yossarian (Abbott), a U.S. Air Force soldier in World War II who can’t understand why thousands of people who have never met him want to kill him. Desperate to impress his superiors, Colonel Cathcart (Chandler) keeps raising the numbers of the missions his men have to fly, but Yossarian is driven half-mad by his will to live. He wants to complete his service and leave, but his efforts are blocked by Catch-22 — a ridiculous bureaucratic rule that pilots don’t have to fly if they are certified insane, but unfortunately for the men the same rule also states that being driven mad by fear is a rational emotion, which therefore means the individual is sane and able to carry on with the mission.
Ferrer will play Nurse Duckett, the ward nurse who likes Yossarian but has his measure. She’s half-exasperated by his relentless scheming but half-admiring of it too; she enjoys the game but keeps her head on straight. It may well be that in Nurse Duckett, Yossarian has met his match.
Paulson will portray The Chaplain, a nervous, often times ineffectual, gentle chaplain who’s a deep thinker, avoids conflict at all costs, and loves his wife and children intensely. Yossarian and The Chaplain take a liking to one another.
Catch-22 will be executive produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov on behalf of Smokehouse Pictures, along with Richard Brown and Steve Golin on behalf of Anonymous Content. Luke Davies and David Michôd are co-writers and executive producers for the series.
Clooney will direct the series alongside Heslov. Ellen Kuras will serve as producer and direct two episodes.
Ferrer currently plays the series regular role of Cora Babineau in Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes. She previously was a regular in Grey’s Anatomy and recurred on You’re The Worst and Extant. On the film side, she was most recently seen in Insidious: The Last Key. Ferrer is repped by CAA, Lasher Group and Surpin, Mayersohn and Coghill.
Paulson will next be seen in Patty Jenkins’ TNT limited series One Day She’ll Darken opposite Chris Pine. His most recent work includes Amazon’s anthology series Electric Dreams, and the indie feature Rust Creek. Paulson is best known for his work on Mad Men where he played Jon Hamm’s brother, and as a regular on Happy Town and October Road. He’s repped by Buchwald.
