The 2018 Video Music Awards show is headed back to where it all began. MTV said today that the 35th annual VMAs will be held August 20 at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan — the site of its first two trophy shows in the mid-1980s.
The show has hopscotched coasts nearly every year since playing Las Vegas in 2007, and last year’s ceremony was held at the Forum near Los Angeles. It will mark the 12th VMAs for Radio City, the most of any venue. It most recently hosted the show in 2009. Officials said there will be a street renaming and symbolic “moon landing” on Manhattan’s Avenue of the Americas, under the marquee of the 87-year-old landmark venue.
“New York City’s creative energy has always fueled those who live and work here,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “This is where music, film, and art collide and where the Video Music Awards were born.”
Jesse Ignjatovic returns as executive producer for the 2018 VMAs. Bruce Gillmer and Garrett English also are executive producers. The host has yet to be named.
