Deadline’s TV Talk podcast returns with a deep dive into the Primetime Emmys’ Outstanding Actress in a Comedy race. In past years this would be a quick conversation: Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has dominated in the category, winning the past six Emmys in a row to set a record.
But with Louis-Dreyfus and her HBO show not in the running this year, that opens up the field. We’ll spare you a drawn-out argument about who becomes the new frontrunner: We both agree it is Rachel Brosnahan from Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who just took the same honor at the Golden Globes.
Still, it’s early, and it doesn’t discount the strong lineup of potential nominees including Oscar winner Allison Janney from Mom, Tracee Ellis Ross from Black-ish, Elle Kemper from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin from Grace and Frankie along with wildcards like Better Things‘ Pamela Adlon, Issa Rae from Insecure and Frankie Shaw from SMILF.

We also get a sneak-peek listen to Pete’s sit-down with Norman Lear for Deadline’s Behind the Lens video series (the full conversation is coming tomorrow) as well as Dominic’s conversation with The Alienist stars Dakota Fanning and Daniel Bruhl as part of TNT’s session at the recent The Contenders Emmys all-day event.
