Playwright Tony Kushner, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America is back on Broadway, will be the honoree of the Theatre Development Fund’s 50th anniversary gala in June, TDF announced today, with playwright/director James Lapine set to receive the organization’s inaugural TDF Founders Award.
“Tony Kushner is an extraordinary playwright whose body of work embodies everything the theatre can and should be,” said TDF’s Executive Director Victory Bailey. “He has deeply touched audiences around the world, proven once again by the current Broadway production of his seminal work, Angels in America.”
Among Kushner’s current projects is a West Side Story remake script for Steven Spielberg.
Lapine’s work, which includes Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods, “not only entertains, but it illuminates and enriches the human spirit,” said Bailey. “As a mentor he does the same for the students to whom he commits his time and passion each year.” Lapine has volunteered as a TDF Open Doors mentor for the past 17 years.
TDF’s 50th Anniversary Gala is set for Monday, June 18 at Manhattan’s Gotham Hall. Funds raised through the gala support the not-for-profit TDF’s theater programs including the TKTS discount tickets booths.
Actress Julie Halston will host the gala, with additional performers to be announced.
