Wrapping up Deadline’s time at the Tribeca Film Festival today, the stars of Starz’s Sweetbitter were on hand to discuss their unique New York-set drama. Appearing to discuss the series—which premieres on May 6—were Ella Purnell, Caitlin FitzGerald, Paul Sparks, Tom Sturridge, Evan Jonigkeit, Daniyar, Jasmine Mathews, and Eden Epstein.
From series creator Stephanie Danler—based on her own international best-seller—Sweetbitter follows 22-year-old Tess (Purnell), who moves to New York City in pursuit of a new life. When she lands a position at one of the city’s best restaurants, she is absorbed into a strange new world, learning the true craziness of restaurant life.
Reading the material at hand, Purnell was instantly drawn to her character’s qualities. “She’s completely unapologetic,” the actress said. “She has no idea what she wants, or who she is or where she’s going, and there’s something really endearing and appealing and relatable, I think, for everyone about that.”
“I really love the truth, the authenticity that the script brought, and how it was able to paint New York not in a very glamorized way, but just a real rawness to it,” Mathews added. “For my character in particular, being able to tell her story, being a part of my own truth as the only person of color that is a server in the front of house, there’s so much truth there, and I’m all for that.”
In preparation for the series—which centers on a world of people swimming within a culinary environment—most of the actors in the series went through some kind of restaurant training, learning how to chandelier glasses, or properly open a bottle of wine.
