New Line’s Dwayne Johnson monster mash Rampage and John Krasinski’s horror thriller A Quiet Place will continue to battle for No. 1 with industry box office sources predicting that a clear winner won’t be decided until Saturday. Each title is expected to pull in $20M-$21M.
Rampage currently has grossed $41.6M through five days, while A Quiet Place has cleared $105.7M in the middle of week 2. Paramount’s A Quiet Place won Monday at the box office with $2.6M, while Rampage won today with $3.4M over the former’s $3.1M.
The rest of the box office is expected to ease, which is typical before a huge giant hits the marquee — that being Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, which many are expected to earn $220M over three days starting on Thursday night, April 26.
STXfilms has the Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty, which it acquired U.S. and U.K. rights for an estimated reported $15M out of Cannes. Voltage Pictures financed and produced the movie alongside Wonderland Sound and Vision. Voltage also handled foreign sales. I Feel Pretty is expected to open to $15M at 3,400 locations, which would be lower than her previous comedies Trainwreck from Universal ($30M in 2015) and Fox’s Snatched ($19.5M) last year. We’ll see if she overperforms as Trainwreck beat its tracking. The movie is rated PG-13 in an effort to grab a wider audience, specifically women over and under 25. The pic reps the directorial debut of writing partners Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein who also wrote the script.
From there it’s all single digits in regards to openers. Fox Searchlight’s Super Troopers 2, a sequel to the 2001 Vermont cop comedy, will debut in 2,040 venues with $6M.
There’s Traffik from Liongate’s Codeblack Films, which the distributor acquired for less than $5M in September. The pic directed by Deon Taylor will play at roughly 1,000 theaters for a three-day between $3M-$4M. Paula Patton and Omar Epps star as a couple on a romantic weekend who are accosted by a biker gang and must fend them off.
There will be Thursday night previews at 7PM for the three wide entries.
