Love After Love made a showing in its debut, outpacing other reporting openers in a weekend that was all about Isle of Dogs among the specialties.
Russell Harbaugh’s Tribeca ’17 debut Love After Love landed atop the weekend’s specialties when looking at per theater averages, though it was just in one New York location. The feature, starring Andie MacDowell and Chris O’Dowd, grossed $11,263, which gave it the second-highest PTA of the weekend as of Sunday morning, behind Searchlight’s Isle Of Dogs. IFC Films’ current star, however, continues to be comedy The Death of Stalin, which quadrupled its runs in its fourth weekend, grossing over $1.45M over the Easter/Passover weekend, averaging $3,004 (-60%). Last weekend, the feature grossed $1.06M in 141 locations. IFC said there was a 20% drop “or less” in holds with some screens “totally flat.”
Added the company Sunday: “We continue to be very happy with Stalin’s performance at the box office in its third week of release, with reports from theaters and on social media of sold out shows in multiple markets.”
British comedy Finding Your Feet with Timothy Spall, Loanna Lumley and Imelda Staunton rolled out to 14 locations on this side of the Atlantic, grossing just $61,295 for a $4,378 average. The title has had a swell of reaction abroad, taking in $7M in the U.K. since opening in late February. Even in New Zealand, it has cumed over $1.12M since opening close to its British launch.
Among other openers, Gravitas Ventures doc The Gardener grossed $6,800 from its exclusive New York run, while The Orchard’s Outside In took in $11,339 ($1,260 average) in nine theaters.
Searchlight moved Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs to 28 markets, bringing the title to 165 locations across North America in its second weekend and grossing $2.8M for a stellar $17,030 PTA. The distributor touted its audience prowess Sunday, noting it has reach in multiple demos.
“The film earned an ‘A’ from CinemaScore again this weekend —after having earned an ‘A’ last weekend — and polling also indicated that the film continues to draw a broad audience. According to CinemaScore, 54% of the audience is under 35 years of age and 53% are male. As we have added 22 new markets and expanded in already-opened cities, we are now reaching a wider and more mainstream audience. The film is playing well in Art and specialty venues, upscale suburban multiplexes, and in younger and hipper locations, such as the Alamo theaters chain, where the film has found great success across the board.”
Focus slashed showings for 7 Days in Entebbe in its third outing, grossing $62,255 in 85 theaters ($732 average). The period crime thriller, with Rosamund Pike and Daniel Brühl, played 836 theaters last weekend, grossing $655K ($786 average). It has cumed $3.25M.
The Orchard added 45 runs for Flower with Zoey Deutch for week three, grossing $48,072. The title has wilted a bit since its debut, when it averaged $19,284 in three locations. It has cumed $278,096.
Good Deed Entertainment’s Journey’s End seems to have found some footing, though still tepid. The feature grossed $46,200 in 35 theaters, averaging $1,320, which is only a drop of about 16% from last weekend’s $1,583 average when it played in 9 theaters. Journey’s End has cured $98,215.
And Sony Classics’ The Leisure Seeker with Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland crossed a million in its fourth weekend. The title grossed $248,622 in 155 theaters, averaging $1,604.
