EXCLUSIVE: We are finally going to meet Alex Karev’s (Justin Chambers) mom. Former The Bionic Woman and Scruples star Lindsay Wagner will play the key guest role of Helen Karev in the May 3 episode of ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, directed by series co-star Jesse Williams.
So far, we only had gotten a glimpse of Alex’s mom as a younger woman in a flashback during an episode earlier this season that was directed by Grey’s star Ellen Pompeo. The part was played by Emily Rutherfurd.
In the logline for the May 3 episode titled “Fight For Your Mind” and written by Andy Reaser, Alex (Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) go on a trip to Iowa to find Alex’s mom, whom he hasn’t heard from in a very long time. Meanwhile, Meredith (Pompeo) gives a presentation on her mini-livers project, which attracts a ton of attention, while Jackson (Williams) works to rebuild the foundation after its reputation is threatened.

Wagner’s casting news comes on the heels of Grey’s Anatomy‘s renewal for a 15th season, making it ABC’s longest-running primetime scripted series, eclipsing 1952 sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett, which aired for 14 seasons. Wagner appears in the episode before the return of Geena Davis, who’ll be reprising her role as Dr. Nicole Herman in a storyline which may be connected to Jessica Capshaw’s departure from the series.
Created and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy follows Meredith Grey (Pompeo) and the team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, who are faced with life-or-death decisions on a daily basis. They seek comfort from one another, and, at times, more than just friendship. Together they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.
The series, from ABC Studios, stars Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Chambers as Alex Karev, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Williams as Jackson Avery, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce and Giacomo Gianniotti as Andrew DeLuca.
Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, co-showrunner alongside Rhimes, William Harper, Zoanne Clack, Debbie Allen and Fred Einesman are executive producers.
